September Church Spotlight: Woodland Heights Baptist Church

Living on Mission, Right Here at Home

For years, Woodland Heights Baptist Church has carried a simple but powerful belief: the mission field isn’t always somewhere far away. Sometimes, it’s right here in our own community.

That belief has been lived out time and time again through their partnership with Conway Ministry Center and the Refuge.

Long before the Refuge welcomed its first family, members of Woodland Heights were already part of its story. During the height of renovations, teams from the church showed up ready to work—painting, repairing, cleaning, building, and doing whatever was needed to help transform an old property into a place where families experiencing homelessness could one day find safety and hope.

And they didn’t stop showing up when the renovations ended.

Woodland Heights has continued to support the Ministry Center and Refuge in ways both big and small, always looking for opportunities to meet practical needs and love our neighbors well. Most recently, members of the church installed a new basketball goal at the Refuge, giving our teenagers—and plenty of younger kids, too—a place to play, exercise, laugh, and simply get to be kids.

It may seem like a basketball goal is a small thing compared to the enormous challenges a family experiencing homelessness faces. But sometimes ministry looks like providing a safe place for a teenager to shoot hoops after a difficult day. Sometimes it looks like swinging a hammer during a renovation. Sometimes it looks like collecting supplies, serving a meal, praying, giving, or simply showing up when there is work to be done.

That is what local missions look like.

Woodland Heights Baptist Church has demonstrated that caring for our neighbors isn't separate from the Great Commission—it is part of living it out. They have reminded us that there is important Kingdom work to be done across the world, but there is also a mission field right outside our own front doors.

We are incredibly thankful for Woodland Heights Baptist Church—for their hands willing to work, their hearts willing to serve, and their longstanding commitment to loving people right here in our community.
